Amateur Gardening: what's New with Julia Heaton. 15th Sept 2001
What's extremely useful about it is that it gives step-by-step instructions on how to build 15 different water garden designs including fountains, waterfall and stream gardens, a decked pond, a rill garden and even a grotto. There's plenty here to inspire. The book is good value.
Water Gardening: Book Reviews by Andrea Hargreaves. Jan 2002
Pick up all too many practical-based books and you are likely to be confronted with a maze of information giving you only the haziest of keys to help find your way about. So I was immediately impressed with the magazine style contents page in Water Garden Design that tells you exactly what youre going to get. The Essentials section tells you things you need to know before you start, The Designs are simply that the contents page even has a thumbnail picture of each project and The Directories lists plants with a water garden bias - again with pictures of each one and addresses fish keeping and pond maintenance.
Yvonne Rees and Peter May confirm with understated passion that water is the most exciting element you can use in garden design and then proceed to give a quantity of general advice about planning, preparation and construction.
Each project looks at all the components, from design to planting, with a plan listing plants and hard landscaping. Confidently written, this book could well be the one to give any wavering readers the confidence to get excavating that first pond.

The Irish Garden: Overleaf by Mary Davies. Oct/Nov 2001
..is fun to read even if you have immediate intention of adding a water feature to your garden you may find yourself suddenly inspired !
Each kind of water feature and its construction is clearly illustrated with drawings: every detail is carefully laid out stage-by-stage. The photographs are delightful and the main ones do show the actual water gardens under discussionThere is a short plant directory, an index, and lots of sound advice on keeping fish, and on maintenance. If no garden today is complete without a water feature, here is the starting point to create one.

Dear Mr May,
I am just writing to thank you very much for your informative talk at our meeting on Tuesday, ..it must have taken some time to put it together. Talking to members afterwards the feeling was it was well worth the effort of turning out on such a bad night. Water gardening must be the in thing as we had our largest meeting so far for your talk.
